Tournament Day 2017

Tournament t–shirts were available to pre-order for $12 each. You can view the design here. T–shirts will be delivered to teams at registration on tournament day, at which time payment will be due by cash or check (payable to Science Olympiad at MIT). A limited quantity will be available to purchase on tournament day at tournament headquarters, room 10-105 (Bush Room).
Drop-off and Parking
Drop-off information, location, and maps are available on our Hotels & Parking page. Please have buses drop off students along Amherst Street (facing west). Please note that Amherst Street is a one-way street only accessible from Massachusetts Avenue. Please unload buses as quickly as possible, as Amherst Street is a small space and quick turnover will help all teams unload in time for the beginning of the tournament. Buses may then proceed to either of the 2 parking locations indicated on this map.
Individuals or teams arriving at the tournament by car may park for free, without a permit, in any of the lots listed under “Parking at MIT without a Permit” near the bottom of this page. Among those lots, the building 44/46 lot is closest to the main part of campus.
One coach from each team must check in at tournament headquarters, room 10-105 (Bush Room), no later than 8:00 a.m. on tournament day. Teams arriving the day before the tournament may check in at tournament headquarters between 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Friday, January 20. At check-in, coaches must submit the following:
• A liability and a photo release form for each student, completed and signed by the student’s parent or guardian. Students without a completed releases will not be allowed to compete.
• Payment for pre-ordered t-shirts ($12 per t-shirt) if applicable, by cash or check payable to Science Olympiad at MIT (this may be done later in the day).
At check-in, we will provide coaches with a set of schedules, maps, wristbands, and additional documents with important information about tournament day.
As is the procedure at the national tournament, each coach will be given 15 wristbands to distribute to competing students. Students may be asked to show their wristbands to event supervisors and will not be allowed to compete without a wristband. Awards ceremony main venue seating (up to 16 people per team; see below) will also be enforced by wristband. Students will not be required to show a wristband to compete in trial events as alternates may compete in trial events.
Impound is located at respective event locations and closes promptly at 8:30 a.m. Air Trajectory, Electric Vehicle, It’s About Time, Protein Modeling, and Wind Power must be impounded per the event rules.
Homerooms, Event Locations, and Event Schedule
Each team has been assigned a homeroom. Please be considerate of the rooms and clean up the rooms thoroughly at the end of the day. Science Olympiad at MIT will be hit with huge cleaning charges if rooms are left too messy, so please help us avoid this!
A complete schedule of events, including event locations, is available here. Teams must compete in the time block to which they have been assigned by team number. Teams that have not signed up for self-scheduled events by 11:59 p.m. Eastern time on Thursday, January 19, 2017, will choose from remaining available time slots at check-in on tournament day. Forensics is located in building N52, two blocks north of main campus on Massachusetts Avenue. Students may walk to N52 on their own, or may meet a member of the tournament staff in the lobby of building 7 at 8:20, 9:35, 10:50, 12:05, 1:20, or 2:35 (10 minutes before the start of each event period) to walk to building N52 together.
Hospitality/Coaches’ Room and Lunch
Free boxed lunches will be provided for coaches and event supervisors in room 10-105 (Bush Room) beginning at about 11:45 a.m. on competition day. For students, there are several lunch options. First, there are several fast food-style restaurants in building W20 (including Subway, Japanese, Middle Eastern, Indian, Mexican, Dunkin’ Donuts, Pizza/American, and a Convenience Store). A second recommended option is ordering food for delivery — inexpensive nearby pizza options include Domino’s and Cinderella’s. Food should be delivered to and picked up at 77 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge, MA 02139 (building 7 on the map). The third option, of course, is for students to bring their own lunches from home.
Guided tours of MIT’s campus will be offered for interested students on Friday, January 20, 2017, the day before the tournament, beginning and ending in the lobby of building 7. Tours will last 75-90 minutes. Further information regarding tours will be posted soon. We ask that students, parents, and coaches from the Boston area kindly allow out-of-town attendees priority on the tours, since MIT offers campus tours almost every weekday throughout the year.

Scoring and Arbitration
The tournament will be scored by the national policies and procedures outlined here. Scoring headquarters will be located in room 10-105 (Bush Room). Scoring questions or irregularities should be brought by a coach to the attention of the tournament organizers located in room 10-105 no later than the beginning of the awards ceremony at 7:00 p.m. Matters requiring arbitration will be resolved by a committee consisting of Katie Shade (Co-Director), Stephen Tang (Co-Director), and Priya Pillai (Committee Lead). Decisions of the arbitration committee are final, and the results announced at the awards ceremony are final.
The awards ceremony will be held in Kresge Auditorium (W16-109) and will begin at 7:00 p.m. Doors open at 6:00 p.m.; please be seated no later than 6:55 p.m. so that the awards ceremony can start on time.
As is the procedure at the national tournament, due to space constraints, up to 16 people per team (usually, the 15 competing students plus 1 coach) may sit in the awards ceremony main venue (Kresge Auditorium, W16-109) for the awards ceremony. Additional tournament attendees may watch a live streaming video of the awards ceremony in the overflow seating location, in the same building. Volunteers will direct you.
Attire is casual — we expect that most students will wear the same clothes that they wore to the competition. If possible, teams should bring all their belongings to the awards ceremony so that they can proceed directly to buses at the conclusion of the ceremony.
Medals will be awarded to the top six teams in each event and trophies will be awarded to the top six schools at the tournament. Only the top-placing team from each school will be considered for a trophy.
Teams may pick up their marked-up exams from the stage at the conclusion of the awards ceremony. Blank exams and answer keys for written events will be distributed online shortly after the tournament. We ask that coaches do not share MIT tournament exams and answer keys with teams that did not attend the MIT tournament until after the end of May 2017.
